7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

The opportunity I would like to pursue is the creation of accessible healthcare.

The who: people in need of medical services

The what: Introduce new ways for people to take care of their health

The why: People can afford medical services or do not have access.

Hypothesis. I believe healthcare should be a human right not a privilege.

· Patients would be able to access healthcare

· Bringing healthcare to people in need without making causing a financial strain

· By offering a variety of services using technology, that could be easier to afford and access

While interviewing fellow coworkers and people about our current healthcare system, I come to realized that insurances are expensive for some people. Some decide to go without coverage because they cannot afford it and for other it does not make sense to have one because after paying their monthly premiums, the copay and deductibles are high. I asked the reimbursement that insurances pay for patients seeing at the clinic and they range from $0 to $60 per visit, while patients are responsible for a copay of $25 to $55. While a client who does not have insurance first visit is $240 and follow ups are $120. When it comes to prescribed medications, most insurances will only cover for generic ones and make it difficult for patients to access new ones.

I believe this opportunity exists because no matter the age, at one point or another every human will need medical care in their lifetime. If prices for medical services are reasonable, people could take care of their health and their love ones.

  1. Hey Herzen,
Creating an affordable healthcare in today's political climate might be tough. The repeals to ObamaCare and such have pushed back against your idea. While the opportunity is there, I feel you need to find a way to innovate your idea beyond just "Affordable healthcare." Maybe start a 100% online version of healthcare, or something along those lines. Best of luck with your idea, I will try and think of ways to further your idea along.

  2. Hi Herzen,

I agree with you that healthcare should be accessible to all people of all backgrounds and financial statuses. I used to work in the pharmacy and was appalled by the costs of necessary medications such as insulin and how immunizations were marketed to patients with a monetary incentive to the employees. I also believe that if Canada and Europe is able to implement a for-all healthcare system, so can the United States.

  3. Hi Herzen,
This a very interesting and serious topic. I agree that we need to find a better way to get all people covered. We can't let money be the reason that people don't get the medical services they need to survive. While I am not sure exactly how to go about doing this, I appreciate that you recognized the opportunity and want to work to find the solution.

  4. Hello Herzen,

This is a very great point not only to bring up as a discussion post, but as a national topic as well. Someone without insurance will have immense trouble getting their hands on what they need to survive. A solution that would dramatically reduce the prices of these services while keeping the revenue high for healthcare centers would be an all-around win.
